Well, I was trying to let them explain, but I was asking them questions to see if I was understanding correctly (which obviously I wasn't!) and that's where the problem was.

You know what, though? After that, the woman who'd asked me the question initially got her answer from a different player, not the ones who'd given me such a hard time. And she thanked me for going around to get the answer and coming back to her even though she'd found out in the meantime. I think it was obvious to all around who was really trying to be helpful.

If they really enjoy being cranky and nasty like that, so be it. Sucks to be them.

I would've just let them explain it and stepped back. It's great to watch people hang themselves and all you can do is shrug because you don't know how it works!
The 'problem' with your being so nice is that you give too many people the benefit of the doubt and ignore your good instincts. If you knew it was a bad idea you must then listen! ... and it's ok to not be so nice ... sometimes that's what is called for and if they wind up not liking you ... Ef Em! Who cares? You HAVE friends ... everyone doesn't need to be your friend.

Good for you and Excel! You are such a good problem solver! Yea!
