{"id":1001,"date":"2013-01-27T22:03:05","date_gmt":"2013-01-28T03:03:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alisonblogs.com\/wordpress\/?p=1001"},"modified":"2013-01-27T22:03:05","modified_gmt":"2013-01-28T03:03:05","slug":"understanding-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alisonblogs.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/2013\/01\/27\/understanding-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Some Links About Understanding Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Because I can&#8217;t think about what to write about next, I&#8217;m going to give you all a bunch of links that have helpful information about science in general, and some of the things I find myself referring to or referencing when I talk about science.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/undsci.berkeley.edu\/article\/intro_01\" title=\"Understanding Science\" target=\"_blank\">Understanding Science: An overview<\/a> is geared towards students and teachers at the K-12 levels.  It has some good explanation of what science is (and is not) and how it is &#8220;done.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/teacher.pas.rochester.edu\/phy_labs\/AppendixE\/AppendixE.html\" title=\"Intro to Scientific Method\" target=\"_blank\">Introduction to the Scientific Method<\/a> is a little higher order than this, and also includes definitions of terminology that is misunderstood. . .like the difference between Theories and Laws.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/abacus.bates.edu\/~ganderso\/biology\/resources\/writing\/HTWsections.html\" title=\"Journal Paper format\" target=\"_blank\">The Structure, Format, Content, and Style of a Journal-Style Scientific Paper<\/a> outlines how a piece of research is written up for submission to a science journal.  It&#8217;s different from your school project, and I think it&#8217;s important to note that the Abstract is not as definitive of findings as news reports make it out to be!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisegeek.com\/what-is-soft-science.htm\" title=\"Soft Science\" target=\"_blank\">What is Soft Science?<\/a> defines the difference between the methods and results of soft science vs. hard science.  It&#8217;s some good things to know.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sph.bu.edu\/otlt\/lamorte\/EP713\/Web_Pages\/EP713_Causality\/EP713_Causality4.html\" title=\"component-cause model\" target=\"_blank\">The Sufficient-Component Cause Model<\/a> will help you understand what &#8220;correlation is not causation&#8221; means.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The National Coalition for Health Profession Education in Genetics (NCHPEG), with support from the NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research (OBSSR), developed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nchpeg.org\/bssr\/\" title=\"Genomics\" target=\"_blank\">this site<\/a> to provide sufficient genetics background to allow social and behavioral scientists (SBS) to engage effectively in interdisciplinary research with genetics researchers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/science.howstuffworks.com\/innovation\/scientific-experiments\/scientific-peer-review.htm\" title=\"Peer Review\" target=\"_blank\">How Scientific Peer Review Works<\/a> This is a good article that explains what peer review is, and presents a fairly balanced view of its benefits and its shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p>Related to peer review, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v435\/n7045\/full\/4351003b.html\" title=\"Not so deep impact\" target=\"_blank\">this piece from Nature<\/a> discusses the &#8220;Impact Factor&#8221; of scientific publications.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/pubs\/factsheets\/j_sel_faq.html\" title=\"Medline FAQ\" target=\"_blank\">Journal Selection for MEDLINE\u00ae Indexing at NLM<\/a> is a FAQ about how a journal is selected to be included in National Library of Medicine at the NIH.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Because I can&rsquo;t think about what to write about next, I&rsquo;m going to give you all a bunch of links that have helpful information about science in general, and some of the things I find myself referring to or referencing when I talk about science.
